The Aging Neck
The platysma muscle bands are a pair of vertical neck muscles. They are located at the front and sides of the neck. Throughout your life these muscles are very active. Because of this hyperactivity, they usually increase in size as you get older. At the same time, your skin is going through changes also. The proteins that give skin its full, youthful look, collagen and elastin, are degrading. The skin is losing some elasticity, and it is not as well supported as it was in youth. Volume in the skin is also lost as the breakdown of collagen and elastin progresses. These changes cause the neck bands to be more prominent and the overlying skin to look aged.
Botox treatment stops the transmission of some neural signals in the muscle. This causes the muscle to relax more, so they become less prominent. The results create the appearance of a smoother, younger neck. The treatment lasts for about four months before another treatment is needed.
