Facial Microneedling Treatment
A facial microneedling treatment is similar in concept to microchanneling. However, microneedling goes back much farther. It was first theorized, during the 90’s, that piercing the skin within scars and fine wrinkles would stimulate the healthy skin below to produce additional collagen. It was an effective non-surgical procedure at the time, and it has only been refined over the years.
Why it is Effective
There are many reasons why facial skin slowly loses its ability to produce the collagen that makes it so elastic when we are younger. One reason is that we are exposed to environmental damages like UV rays and even smog. Another reason that women experience slower collagen production is that it is triggered by estrogen. After menopause, levels of both collagen and estrogen are reduced.
Other facial rejuvenation treatments work similarly to microneedling. By causing damage to the skin, even if it is only slight, the skin’s own cell regeneration and collagen production processes are stimulated. This means that your skin is doing most of the work, and the treatment itself is minimally invasive for a shorter recovery time.
Benefits of Facial Microneedling Treatments
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, can also be added to your facial microneedling treatment. A facial microneedling treatment with or without PRP is still effective. However, PRP can bring additional healing benefits for those with severe scarring due to acne or burns, sunspots and deeper wrinkles like laugh lines.
With the addition of PRP to the treatment, you can compound the benefits you see over several, regularly scheduled treatments. This makes them more effective in the long run and well worth the investment.
Recovery Time
As a minimally invasive procedure, the recovery time is also minimal. It is recommended that you refrain from using any personal skincare products or applying makeup for at least 24 hours. While some will see a dramatic difference in just one day, others may need a bit more time to heal. Still, the recovery time should be no more than three days. The amount of time needed to heal from a facial microneedling treatment depends on several factors, such as age and the issue that is being targeted. Your recovery time can be estimated during your consultation appointment before your treatment is scheduled.
Continual Care
To see the best results, you may need more than one treatment. Typically, severe acne scars require several treatments to start seeing those scars fade. After the first treatment, it will be much easier to estimate how many treatments will be necessary, as Dr. Khosh or Michele Rivard, PA, will be able to see how your skin responds. It is also important to care for your skin with quality skincare products used regularly once your skin has fully healed.
