Lip shape is determined by heredity. It is also affected by aging. Articles abound with information about what the shape of your lips are saying about you. Truth? Lip shape and size say nothing about your personality. Researchers have found that every culture has preferences regarding lip shape and size when it comes to standards of beauty, but even that can change with the times.
Read Your Lips
Everyone has unique lips. No two people have the same lip prints; in fact, prints from your lips are as unique as your fingerprints.
Lips have three or four outer layers of skin as compared to the 15 or 16 protective layers on the rest of your body. Consequently, lips have a natural pinkish color because the blood vessels show through. They also lack hair follicles, sweat glands and they have very little melanin. This leaves your lips vulnerable to damage from the sun and other environmental stressors.
Aging causes the upper lip to become thinner and longer as the soft tissue in the lips decreases. Lips lose volume and consequently, you may be perceived to look older. Fortunately, you have options.
Turn Up the Volume
If you feel your lips are too thin, you can add volume and plump them up. There are surgical and non-surgical means of achieving the look you desire. Lips can be revitalized with minimally invasive dermal fillers providing effective, though temporary, enhancement.
Products like Juvéderm® or Restylane® fill out your lips and can be used to add balance and symmetry. If you are unsure about the decision to make a permanent change to your lips, this procedure lasts long enough for you to try on the look for several months before making a firm commitment.
Your lips are one of the most prominent features of your face. Keep them looking good by keeping them moisturized and hydrated. Drink plenty of water and use sunscreen. Basic moisturizers such as cocoa butter, aloe vera, coconut oil and vitamin E provide protection and serve as a primer before applying color to your lips.
If you are considering lip enhancement, contact Creative Facial Aesthetics. Schedule a consultation appointment with Michele Rivard, PA or Dr. Khosh for more information about your options.
